What is Melasma on Face?
Melasma is a common pigmentation disorder that causes brown or grey patches to appear on the skin. It often affects the skin on the face. Melasma on Face is not a serious skin problem but it affects your appearance.
Most people get it on their face, cheeks, bridge of their nose, forehead, chin, and above their upper lip but people don’t know Melasma Causes. This form of facial pigmentation is sometimes called chloasma, but as this means green skin, the term melasma (brown skin) is preferred.
It may be due to the malfunction of the melanocytes in the skin which causes too much color production. Darker skin tones people have melanocytes as compared to lighter skin tones people.
- It may also be caused by taking contraceptive pills, or hormonal changes during pregnancy.
- Melasma which is caused by pregnancy usually goes away after delivery.
- It may also be caused due to too much sun exposure.
- It is also caused by frequently treated topical creams containing hydroquinone.
Types of Melasma on Face
- Epidermal Melasma:- The presence of excess melanin in the superficial layers of skin. It is brown in color and It has also a well-defined border. It responds well to treatment.
- Excess Melanocytes:- It commonly appears in dark skin toned people on Nose, Cheeks, Chin, Forehead, Face, Body, Stomach.
- Dermal Melasma:- It may be identified by the presence of cells that produce melanin throughout the dermis. It appears in light brown or bluish in color. It responds poorly to any treatment.
- Mixed Melasma:- It is the most common type of melasma which includes both dermal type and epidermal type of melasma. It is a combination of bluish, light and dark brown patches. It is partially treated.
Melasma Signs and Symptoms
The primary symptoms of melasma are the appearance of discoloration patches on forehead, cheeks, chin and your upper lips. Melasma is identified by discoloration or hyperpigmentation primarily on the face.

Required Ingredients in Melasma Home Remedy
- LEMON JUICE
It is commonly used as a natural skin lightener. Because it has astringent properties. Due to the acidic nature of freshly extracted lemon helps to lighten the dark patches and it also helps in removing old skin cells and improving your skin naturally.
If you don’t want to scar yourself, you should not use this treatment for longer than a week.
Turmeric has Curcumin which has antioxidant and skin-lightening and healing properties that reduce skin melanin. Make some paste of turmeric and whole milk with a little gram flour and apply it to your affected area. Rinse off with lukewarm water after drying up this paste. It acts as an excellent exfoliator.
You can also use turmeric with coconut milk, rose water and lemon juice It is also one of the effective face packs.
- ONION JUICE
The onion juice contains sulphuric properties that can lighten up the skin discoloration and can restore the natural skin tone and provide nourishment to the skin. The mixture of equal amounts of apple cider vinegar and onion juice is highly beneficial on dark patches on your skin.
- ALOE VERA GEL
Aloe Vera is the most effective ingredient for healing all skin woes. Extract fresh aloe vera gel from the plant and rub on the pigmented skin and leave it for 15-20 minutes. Rinse off with lukewarm water to remove dead skin cells. It is also very helpful for pregnant women in reducing melasma.
Oatmeal is an amazing natural exfoliator. Apply a mixture of milk, honey, and oatmeal. It helps in removing brown spots and dead skin cells and rejuvenate your skin.
Almonds have properties of high protein and vitamin-E and it helps in removing discoloration of the skin. Make a pack of almond powder, honey, and milk and leave it for 5-10 minutes and rinse it off with lukewarm water.
Cucumber has high water content and helps to hydrate pigmented skin and lighten brown patches. It helps in removing Melasma and other skin problems.
Papayas have papain enzyme which acts as a natural exfoliating agent that helps in removing dead and damaged skin cells. It is very effective in Melasma treatment.
Sandalwood is an amazing skin lightening ingredient that improves skin complexion. It helps in reducing signs of Melasma and other types of blemishes, without any irritation or side effects.
- APPLE CIDER VINEGAR
Apple cider vinegar works as a bleaching agent due to its acetic acid. It is very beneficial for the treatment of dark spots. Take a mixture of equal amounts of apple cider vinegar and water. Too concentrated of this mixture can leave scars on your face, so you should have remembered the amount or quantity of every product.
You can use some good supplements which contain good antioxidants. Because antioxidants play a major role in clearing and glowing skin or in removing blemishes.
You can use some good quality anti-aging melasma cream that contains Vitamins C and A.
- Vitamin B3
Vitamin B3 can be very helpful in treatments of discoloration of the skin. It helps in reducing blemishes and patches of Melasma.
